(CNSNews.com) – The White House on Monday said President Donald Trump indicated Friday that he was willing to tell Special Counsel Robert Mueller about his interactions to former FBI Director James Comey, but no “further discussion” was had about whether the president would testify before Congress on the matter.
A reporter asked White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, “You said that the president wants to see this Russia investigation and all of these investigations wrapped up as soon as possible. He said on Friday that he would be willing to testify under oath. Can you say when he would be willing to do that? Would he be willing to do that before Congress goes into recess to get this done as soon as possible?”
“I think he was actually specifically asked whether or not he’d be willing to talk to Director Mueller, and he made very clear what his position was,” Spicer said.
“So he’s not saying he would go before Congress?” the reporter asked.
“I don’t know,” Spicer said. “I’ve not had a further discussion on that. I know exactly what he said on Friday in the Rose Garden is exactly what he believes.”
As CNSNews.com previously reported, during a joint press conference with the president of Romania, Trump was asked about Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week.
ABC’s Jonathan Karl asked the president about Comey’s assertion that the president told him, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go,” referring to the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
TRUMP: I didn’t say that.
KARL: So he lied about that?
TRUMP: ” didn’t say that. I mean I will tell you I didn’t say that, and there’d be nothing wrong if I did say it, according to everybody that I read today, but I did not say that.
KARL: And did he ask for a pledge of loyalty from you? That’s another thing he said.
TRUMP: No he did not.
(Comey actually testified that the president asked for a pledge of loyalty from Comey.)
KARL: Would you be willing to speak under oath to give your version of those events?
TRUMP: 100 percent. I didn’t say under oath. I hardly know the man. I’m not going to say I want you to pledge allegiance. Who would do that? Who would ask a man to pledge allegiance under oath? I mean think of it. I hardly know the man. It doesn’t make sense. No I didn’t say that, and I didn’t say the other.
