Variations on ‘Muhammad’ 3rd Most-Popular Boy’s Name in England

(CNSNews.com) – When its variations are combined into a single count, the name Muhammad –along Mohammed and Mohammad—was the third most popular boy’s name in England and Wales in 2013, according to data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS compiles data on boy’s and girl’s names from the birth registration records for all live births in England and Wales.

In 2013, says ONS, there were 3,499 baby boys named Muhammad, 2,887 named Mohammed, and 1,059 named Mohammad. A combined total of 7,445 boys were given one of the three names.

Popular Boys Names in England

The combined 9,136 baby boys who were named either “Harry” (5,888) or “Henry” made names derived from Henry the most popular boy’s name in England. Henry is the name of some of the most famous royal figures in British history, including Henry II, Henry VI, Henry V, Henry VIII, and Prince Harry, the second son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.

The combined 7,749 baby boys who were named either “Oliver” (6,949) or “Ollie” (800) made that name the second most popular—edging out “Muhammad,” “Mohammed,” and “Mohammad”—by 304 babies.

In the United States, according to data from the Social Security Administration, all versions of the name Muhammad rank 178th after accounting for name variations. In 2013, there were 2,248 boys who were named either Muhammad, Mohammed, Mohammad or Mohamed.

The name “John” combined with variations on it ranked as the top name for boys in the United States.
