Pro-Life Groups Criticize Obama Invoking Daughters’ ‘Choices’ to Justify Planned Parenthood Funding

(CNSNews.com) – Pro-life groups are critical that President Barack Obama would invoke his two daughters, ages 11 and 14, when promoting more tax dollars for Planned Parenthood. The president’s comment made at a fundraiser this week comes at a time when the administration is upping federal grants for the organization where state governments are scaling back funding.

“It is unfortunate that the president uses his daughters to promote an idea that diminishes the full potential of all women and girls,” said Kristi Hamrick, spokeswoman for Americans United for Life.

During a campaign fundraising event in Portland, Ore. Tuesday, Obama criticized his Republican opponent former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for opposing funding for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider.

“Mr. Romney wants to get rid of funding for Planned Parenthood. I think that is a bad idea,” Obama told donors in Portland. “I’ve got two daughters. I want them to control their own health care choices. We’re not going backwards, we’re going forwards.”

The next day, the Obama administration announced a $426,000 federal grant for Planned Parenthood clinics in North Carolina. Earlier this month, the state legislature approved a $343,000 cut to Planned Parenthood and other family planning services in the state.

Hamrick said the funding is anti-woman.

“The fact that women carry in them the capacity for new life is not a handicap to them or a stumbling block to a great career,” Hamrick told CNSNews.com. “Women and girls have been routinely harmed by an abortion industry more interested in profit than in protecting their long-term health and life-giving potential.

“To go forward, we must fully protect women and girls from substandard care, from abusers who use the abortion industry to cover their crimes, from inadequate information about the long-term impacts of abortion and life-ending drugs and devices. We should be working to build a culture that embraces all of a woman’s unique gifts, including her special role as mother, and not just her contributions to a career – as wonderful as that is,” she said.

The Susan B. Anthony List, an organization that raises money for pro-life candidates, criticized the Obama administration for “usurping” state policies in both North Carolina and New Jersey. Earlier this month, the administration awarded $3.1 million in federal funds to Planned Parenthood affiliates in New Jersey shortly after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoed an appropriations bill including Planned Parenthood funding.

“Yesterday President Obama said he supports Planned Parenthood because he wants his two daughters to be able to ‘control their own health care choices.’ This morning we find that he once again is using euphemisms like ‘choice’ and ‘control’ to trample the rights of states and force pro-life taxpayers to fund the abortion business,” SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement Wednesday.

“President Obama’s decision to overrule the North Carolina legislature today marks the third time this month – and the fifth time in the last year – that he has stepped in to contract directly with the nation’s largest abortion provider,” she added.

In Indiana, the Obama administration threatened last year to withhold $4.3 billion in Medicaid funding from the state after the legislature to defund the organization. In Texas, the administration pulled $30 million in Medicaid funds in March after the state legislature voted to defund Planned Parenthood.

“Several states have tried to cut off tax-funding to Planned Parenthood within their state because they don’t believe tax dollars should be used to fund the nation’s largest abortion provider,” National Right to Life Committee spokeswoman Carol Tobias told CNSNews.com. “President Obama has by-passed the will of the people, giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to Planned Parenthood affiliates within those states. It is sad that he would use his daughters as political pawns to justify his actions.”

In fiscal year 2010, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) got $487.4 million from the federal and state governments, up from $363.2 million the previous year, making taxpayer funding about one-third of the organization’s $1 billion in assets. According to its fact sheet, Planned Parenthood performed 329,445 abortions in 2010.

Though federal law prohibits tax dollars from directly funding abortions, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations is conducting the investigation on whether the federal money is fungible.
