I’ve been a user of Logitech’s Harmony remotes for as long as I can remember. At the risk of gushing, I can’t imagine using anything else to control my home theater.
Alas, they’ve always been on the pricey side–even the lower-end models. But today there’s a deal to be had: Logitech has the refurbished Harmony 610 remote for $39.99, plus around $6 for shipping. That’s after applying coupon code logi_h610_2811 at checkout.
(Tip: if you order two, your cart total will exceed $75, and you’ll qualify for free shipping.)
The Harmony 610 is a discontinued model, but don’t let that stop you. It’s designed to take the place of up to five other remotes, and features an interactive LCD with guided help (for those times when, say, the receiver turns on but the TV doesn’t).
To set it up, you install Logitech’s software on your PC, plug in the remote, then choose the exact home-theater gear (TV, receiver, DVR, game console, Blu-ray player) you own. From there you can set up various “activities” (aka macros) you want the remote to perform.
I won’t say this process is completely dummy-proof (the software can be confusing in places), but it’s definitely the world’s easiest universal-remote setup. And when you’re done, you’ll have a comfortable, smartly designed clicker that can easily replace all your others.
It’s rare to find any Harmony remotes selling for less than $50, so I’d jump on this while you can. By the way, although it’s refurbished, Logitech still provides a one-year warranty, same as with new ones.
Bonus deal: Today only, Woot spin-off site Moofi has a pretty sweet desktop: the refurbished HP Pavilion P6604Y for $399.99, plus $5 for shipping. It features a dual-core AMD Athlon II 220, 6GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, and
Windows 7 Home Premium x64. I’ve purchased several refurbished HPs in recent years and have been quite satisfied with all of them.
