US President Barack Obama ended up with 12 stitches after he was hit in the mouth while playing basketball in Washington over the weekend.
The American president was inadvertently hit in the mouth Friday by the director of programs for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, who had turned to take a shot, and elbowed Obama instead.
“I learned today that the president is both a tough competitor and a good sport,” Rey Decerega said in a statement released by the White House following the incident. “I enjoyed playing basketball with him this morning. I’m sure he’ll be back out on the court again soon.”
The game, played at the Fort McNair gym in Washington, D.C., lasted about 90 minutes before Obama was hit in the mouth.
“After being inadvertently hit with an opposing player’s elbow in the lip while playing basketball with friends and family, the president received 12 stitches,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told the media.
A doctor from the White House medical unit sutured the 49-year-old president’s lip after administering a local anesthetic.
